At SAKS Health, we believe in mentoring the next generation of talent in healthcare marketing and communications. Like the summers past, this year, we were thrilled to welcome two bright and enthusiastic interns who brought fresh perspectives, creativity, and curiosity to our work.
We had a virtual sit down with Nikolina Stanic and Nicholas Jones to learn more about their experiences and what it’s really like to intern at a healthcare communications company.
Q&A with Our 2025 Summer Interns
An introduction to our Interns:
Nicholas Jones: A rising Hobart Senior double majoring in Economics and Management & Entrepreneurship with a concentration in Writing & Rhetoric.
Nikolina Stanic: A rising William Smith Senior who is double majoring in Economics and Mathematics.
Q: What was one thing you learned from this internship?
Nicholas: I learned valuable project management skills during this summer internship. Team projects can be difficult. In the past I have experienced these challenges through working on projects that require a group vision to succeed. However, when lacking a group vision it becomes difficult to manage the small nuances that ensure success. Being on the SAKS team taught me the communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills that are imperative to tackling multiple projects, all with many different stages, at once.
Nikolina: Not only did I learn about the job and the pharmaceutical industry but I also gained valuable experience and soft skills that are really important. I learned how to contribute to the team and adapt even with the time difference of 6 hours, which is the reality of work in our global, virtual economy. I also learned ways to communicate proactively with the team and most importantly how to be a part of one.
Q: How, if at all, has your perception of the pharma/healthcare industry changed?
Nikolina: Since I had very little knowledge prior to this internship, I think I just learned a lot of new things, but nothing specifically changed. I just have a better understanding of the complex and intertwined healthcare industry.
Nicholas: My perception of the pharma/healthcare industry has lightened from learning about the industry. Previously I was slightly upset with the healthcare industry because of the prevalence of chronic illness that America faces. I felt that our healthcare system failed us. But learning about the system made me understand the vast complexity of our system and it is wrong to blame the system as a whole for our problems. Rather, there are gaps in our system that need addressing, and more importantly, our system has made incomprehensible strides over the last century. We are more advanced than ever, and the future of healthcare is unbelievably exciting.
Q: What would you tell prospective interns?
Nicholas: This 8 week internship is packed full of learning and understanding of how SAKS innovative solutions integrate into the market. It is an exciting period where you will learn a little bit of everything, including: project management, creative design, group thinking, communication, market research, project coordination, and all about the medical and pharmaceutical fields.
Nikolina: I would recommend them this internship if they are willing to put time and effort into learning about something new and if that is something of their interests. I would also tell them that everyone in the team is working really hard and they are great people so definitely take the advantage of the time you spend with them.
Q: Anything else you would like to add?
Nikolina: I think this was a big step for me regarding a job search in the future. Not only did it prepare me for the job market it also helped me understand the insights of how one great company operates.
Nicholas: SAKS Health helped me understand my passion for the healthcare industry. Working in, and seeing how the landscape of the industry works, made me ever more excited to join a growing industry in the future, and help shape the future of the healthcare industry.
As you can see with just some of their insights, our summer interns left a lasting impression—not only with their hard work and creativity but also with their genuine interest in healthcare communications. At SAKS Health, we’re proud to support young professionals as they explore careers that combine purpose and innovation.
